As one of the three foundations of ethical conduct in Buddhist practice, speech both reveals our state of mind and shapes the conditions around us. What we say - and how we say it - can increase fear, confusion, division, and defensiveness or contribute to trust, understanding, connection, and joy. The power of speech is particularly apparent in the pain and consolation of our closest relationships.
In light of this enduring insight, Gautama the Buddha encouraged his students to “speak only the speech that neither torments the self nor does harm to others.” That speech, he taught, “is truly well spoken.” 2,500 years later, American psychologist and peacemaker Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, inspired in part by the living words of the Buddha, developed Nonviolent Communication (NVC), a practical framework for cultivating the compassionate listening and honest self-expression necessary for Right Speech amid the conflict and chaos of everyday life.
In this in-person workshop, we will explore NVC as a technique for Right Speech and a tool of our collective awakening. Through gentle somatic grounding, live demonstration, paired exercises, and group reflection, we will practice discerning the difference between observation and evaluation, sharing our embodied awareness with care and courage, attuning to our universal human needs, and making clear, collaborative requests for the benefit of all beings.
Ara Castello is a communication strategist, educator, organizer, and coach who supports people in recognizing and realizing their true power. Rooted in movement, medicine, and meditation, Ara works toward a shared vision of peace on Earth.
